The Boston Cecilia begins its 138th season with a program of sublime beauty that brings together music from 19th and 20th century France and England. Honoring the souls of the departed, the centerpiece of the concert is the dramatic and ethereal Requiem by Maurice Duruflé, with Barbara Bruns at the organ and guest mezzo-soprano and cellist. Our guest performers will also present works by Massenet and Saint-Saëns, and the chorus will sing motets by Charles Villiers Stanford and William H. Harris. As we remember President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated fifty years ago this month, we also offer a rare concert performance of Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing, which was composed by Herbert Howells in 1964 “to the honored memory” of JFK.
