The Armistice that marked the end of fighting of World War I between Germany and the Allied Powers went into effect at 11 am on November 11th, 1918. This ending of the Great War marked the cessation of one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history but would also be only the first in a series that would leave the world strafed by war throughout the 20th century. The Boston Cecilia opens its 2018-2019 season with a concert which speaks to the belief in the power of peace brought about by and through the inevitability of conflict in the world.  On that theme, we pair A Procession Winding Around Me, Jeffrey Van’s setting of four of Whitman’s Civil War poems, with Herbert Howell’s luminous Requiem. Join us as we raise our voices to acknowledge the existence of conflict in the world and through music, brighten our corner of the world.

William Schuman, Prologue: Carols of Death
William Byrd, Bow thine ear, O Lord
Thomas Tomkins, O Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem
Herbert Howells, Requiem
Jeffrey Van, Fourteen Angels
Jeffrey Van, A Procession Winding Around Me
