THE BOSTON CECILIA PRESENTS CHRISTMAS IN A GREAT ENGLISH CHURCH
November 30, 2010 — Conductor Donald Teeters will lead The Boston Cecilia and actor Benjamin Evett, Founding Artistic Director of the Actors' Shakespeare Project, in what promises to be a novel variation on the Yuletide theme.
On Friday, December 10th, and Sunday the 12th, the Cecilians, at midpoint in their 135th season, will translate the popular English tradition of Christmas Lessons and Carols into a concert format. Evett reads appropriate scripture passages and the chorus play the role of musical "commentators."
Christmas in a Great English Church is the concert title, and the locations are especially ideal for the format: Beacon Hill's Church of the Advent on Friday, and All Saints Parish, Brookline, on Sunday.
Featured will be works by Palestrina, Vaughan Williams, John Tavener, Herbert Howells, and others in what looks like an interesting musical variant amidst many seasonal programs.
Teeters, who is in his penultimate season as Cecilia music director said about this concert concept: “To me, one of the supreme joys of Christmastime in England, or here in Boston for that matter, is to experience the great stories of prophecy and revelation proclaimed alongside the exalted music they inspired, and in the majestic spaces for which they were intended."
