THE BOSTON CECILIA PERFORMS HANDEL'S FINAL ORATORIO, JEPHTHA
March 4, 2011 — The Boston Cecilia concludes its 135th season on Sunday, March 13, at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall with a performance of Handel's final oratorio Jephtha.
The performance, under the direction of Donald Teeters, will start at the unusual time of 2:30 p.m. The Boston Cecilia chorus and period instrument orchestra will be joined by a distinguished cast of vocal soloists. Tenor Aaron Sheehan sings the title role and will be joined by soprano Teresa Wakim, mezzo Deborah Rentz-Moore, countertenor Martin near and baritone Ron Williams. Williams' son, the highly acclaimed treble, Ryan Williams, will take the role of the Angel in this performance.
Teeters, who has led Cecilia since 1968, has made a specialty of Handel's large-scale works performed with period instruments during his tenure as music director. Jephtha, which the group earlier performed in 1995, will mark Teeters' final Handel appearance with Cecilia. Next season, his final one as Cecilia music director, will begin with Bach's St. Matthew Passion in November.
