Cecilia ushers in the holiday season with music of the 20th and 21st centuries that reflects the influence of the 15th and 16th century European musical Renaissance. The live performance a cappella program pairs the early Ave Maria plainchant melody with Kevin Allen’s modern polyphonic setting of that plainchant. You will hear imitative polyphony both in 16th century composer Raffaela Aleotti’s Miserere Mei and 21st century composer George Walker’s tender Stars. The concert will also feature Stephanie Martin’s 2005 mass, Missa Chicagoensis, as well as two different modern settings of the familiar Lutheran tune Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. Adolphus Hailstork’s celebratory Seven Songs of the Rubaiyat will complete the program - a program to celebrate our joyously singing once again for the holidays.
