Excellence in Music
SINCE 1876
Dear Friends of Cecilia,
Sadly, as you all know, there will be no public gatherings in the entire State of Massachusetts for the foreseeable future. We at The Boston Cecilia deeply regret that in order to protect our audience and our singers, we will have to cancel our May 16th concert: Line of Succession: Music of the German Masters. It is, of course, hard to know exactly when we will be able to come together again to rehearse and perform, but we look forward to presenting Our Transcendental Passion in October, and will be sending updates about that over the course of the next few months.
The musicians of The Boston Cecilia are missing making our sweet music together, and missing our audience. In ordinary times, we would be preparing our first concert with new Music Director, Michael Barrett. Instead, there are virtual rehearsals with Michael, virtual choir projects, and our response to the social justice challenges of the day. So we are finding ways both to make music and to share writing about music.
Cecilia alto Marissa Coutts calls on the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop:
I am in need of music that would flow
Over my fretful, feeling fingertips,
Over my bitter-tainted, trembling lips,
With melody, deep, clear, and liquid-slow.
Oh, for the healing swaying, old and low,
Of some song sung to rest the tired dead,
A song to fall like water on my head,
And over quivering limbs, dream flushed to glow!
There is a magic made by melody:
A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool
Heart, that sinks through fading colors deep
To the subaqueous stillness of the sea,
And floats forever in a moon-green pool,
Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.
Our Transcendental Passion- (postponed)
'World premiere' composition by Paul Rudoi
Sunday, March 29th, 3:00 PM - All Saints Parish, Brookline
“The 65 choristers united the range of eras and styles under their beautiful sound, technical polish and engagement with texts. George Cases’s sensitive direction — especially his sympathetic tempos and dynamic sculpting — shed further light on this repertoire.”
